Inlet Valve Repair or Replacement

SCOPE:
How to repair  or replace a Boat Inlet Valve.
See also TR4.024 installing new valve.

INTRODUCTION:
The valve consists of three main components.  A “Nut” section that is placed on the inside of the tube and a “Female or Body” section that is placed on the outside of the tube.  The Body screws into the Nut.  The third section is the Cap and washer that creates a secondary seal.

The Body section consists of a housing and spring loaded, central pin /sealing flange.  The knurled button on top of the spring loaded central pin  can be depressed to vent air or raised to close of the valve.  The pin  can be locked open or closed by rotating the pin half a turn.

REMOVAL PROCEDURE:
1. Deflate the compartment.

2. Remove the valve by grabbing hold of the “Nut”.  This can be done by placing a hand under the tube and shifting the fabric  around until a suitable position if found that enables you to get a good grip on the “nut”.

3. Insert  two prongs (screw drivers) into the outer slots of the “body” and undo with a lever.

3.    Check that there is no grit  or dirt  that prevents the seal on the flange closing.  Clean all surfaces

4.  If the valve is damaged replace it.

5.  Insert new Valve Body and use technique described above to tighten valve.

6.  Soap test to ensure no air is being lost.

NOTE.
Before replacing the valve body check carefully to ensure that the correct body is being used to fit the valve nut.  There are a lot of different valves that look very similar.

If a new valve has to be ordered it is recommended you return the faulty valve.  If this is not possible, measure the height, diameter, colour of the plunger button and any description and part number.
